The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reports that travelers should expect to see construction activities along the southbound I-5 interchange at Slater Road north of Bellingham. Contractor crews working for WSDOT will remove the old, compact roundabout and install a new, larger, two-lane roundabout on Slater Road between Rural Avenue and I-5.
Mid-September, travelers should expect a continuous two-week closure of the southbound I-5 on- and off-ramps at Slater Road. Signed detours will guide people around the ramp closures.
Travelers also should expect nightly single-lane closures on southbound I-5 between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. until construction completes in early 2025. People traveling in this area should plan extra time and expect delays.
The new, larger roundabout will replace the one WSDOT built in 2014 to better manage congestion and improve safety through this corridor. This interim roundabout has successfully and safely kept traffic moving but is due for an upgrade.
