The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting the motoring public of lane closures on Interstate 5 in south Sacramento scheduled for Sunday (January 3) and Monday (January 4) nights.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday the #1 and #2 southbound lanes of I-5 at Seamas Avenue will be closed to grind about 250 feet of the roadway. After that work is completed, the #3 and #4 lanes and the southbound Seamas Avenue off-ramp will be closed. All the work should be finished by 10 a.m.
The same operation will be performed on the northbound lanes on Monday night beginning at 9 p.m. and that work is scheduled to be completed by 5 a.m.
Caltrans recently performed skid testing on the interstate before, on and after the Seamas Avenue undercrossing and discovered that traction has lessened over the last several years due to wear and tear from heavy traffic. Grinding, in which the roadway is roughened up by diamond cutters, is expected to significantly improve the friction on the road surface.
Weather or other unexpected events may delay the work.
