Work to repair cracked pavement along a 4-mile stretch of Interstate 5 near Chehalis, Washington starts tonight.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close one of three lanes of I-5 in both directions, between Rush Road and 13th Street to perform crack seal work.

“Repairing cracks in the pavement is critical for the preservation and maintenance of the highway,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Colin Newell. “Additionally, crack sealing extends the useful life of the roadway until regular pavement rehabilitation work can be done, as well as providing a safe, smooth surface for travelers.”

Crack sealing is a highly effective, low cost pavement preservation treatment, which consists of using specialized materials that bond to the crack, preventing water and other debris from further cracking the asphalt. Crack sealant is specifically engineered to remain flexible at low temperatures so it doesn’t crack or split open, and remains stable at higher temperatures so that it doesn’t track or bleed on the highway during hot summer months.

Construction details

During construction, travelers should expect weekly, nighttime single and double lane closures between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., for the duration of the project. In an effort to reduce the effect on travelers and for the safety of the crews, this work will be done at night when traffic volumes are lower.

This project is scheduled for completion later this spring.
