Multiple Lane Closures, Traffic Delays for I-5 Work in Seattle

The Washington State Department of Transportation reports the following traffic impacts associated with I-5 construction projects in the Seattle area this week.

I-5 Express Lanes Schedule Changes

I-5 from Milepost 165.29 – 172.43
The I-5 express lanes are used to assist the flow of traffic during busy travel times. These lanes are scheduled to move in the direction that will relieve the most congestion from the transportation system.

Work schedule:

  • Wednesday, February 19 to the morning of Friday, February 21 – The Pike Street express ramp to the northbound I-5 express lanes will be closed from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. nightly.

Northbound MLK Jr Way to NE Ravenna Bridge Pavement Repair

I-5 from Milepost 157.44 – 170.28
WSDOT contractor crews are replacing expansion joints and large sections of concrete pavement on northbound I-5 between MLK Junior Way South/SR 900 in Tukwila and Northeast Ravenna Boulevard in Seattle.

Work schedule:

  • Saturday, Feb. 15 to the morning of Sunday, Feb. 16 –The three right lanes of northbound I-5 between 6th Avenue and the I-90 interchange will close from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 22 to the morning of Sunday, Feb. 23 –The three right lanes of northbound I-5 between 6th Avenue and the I-90 interchange will close from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19 to the morning of Friday, Feb. 21 –The right lane and shoulder of southbound I-5 between Denny Way and Union Street will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19 to the morning of Friday, Feb. 21 – The southbound I-5 off-ramp to Union Street will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19 to the morning of Friday, Feb. 21 – The Howell Street on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
  • Saturday, Feb. 22 to the morning of Sunday, Feb. 23 – The Mercer Street on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 11:59 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 22 to the morning of Sunday, Feb. 23 – The northbound I-5 off-ramp to Mercer Street will close from 11:59 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 26 to the morning of Thursday, Feb. 27 – The southbound I-5 off-ramp to Dearborn Street will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Sound Transit’s East Link Extension

Sound Transit crews are constructing the East Link light rail extension from Seattle to Redmond.

Work schedule:

  • Saturday, Feb. 22 to the morning of Sunday, Feb. 23 – Up to two left lanes on westbound I-90 between the Mount Baker Tunnel and Rainier Avenue Bridge will close from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 17 to the morning of Thursday, Feb. 20 –Two right lanes on westbound I-90 between the Mount Baker Tunnel and the floating bridge will close from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Express Lanes Entrances Electronic Sign Replacement

I-5 from Milepost 165.39 – 172.61
WSDOT contractor crews are replacing the sign structures and brackets, along with the electrical and fiber optic systems at seven entrances to the I-5 express lanes. A few of the sign structures will also be redesigned to create a better viewing angle.

Work schedule:

  • No lane or ramp closures are scheduled.
