The Oregon Department of Transportation reports that both spans of the Interstate Bridge (I-5) will see intermittent closures on two Friday nights in July for the annual lubrication of the cables used to raise and lower the bridge spans.
The first closures will be from 10:00 p.m. Friday July 12 to 8:00 a.m. Saturday July 13 to oil the cables.
The second round of closures will be 10:00 p.m. Friday July 26 to 8:00 a.m. July 27 to grease the cables.
The closures will last no more than 25 minutes. The two spans will not be lifted at the same time.
Every year, ODOT crews lubricate by hand more than six miles of cable to keep the lift apparatus on the aging bridge operating properly. The cables are used to raise and lower the bridge spans.
Detours for southbound traffic are State Route 14 east to Interstate 205 and the Glenn Jackson Bridge south to Oregon. The northbound detour will be Interstate 84 east to I-205 north into Washington.
The Interstate Bridge is jointly owned by Oregon and Washington. The northbound span opened in 1917 and the southbound span in 1958. ODOT operates and maintains the bridge.
