The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled 55-hour full ramp closures at Eight Mile Road and Hammer Lane on southbound I-5.
Closures of the Eight Mile Road (exit 481) on-ramp to southbound I-5 and the Hammer Lane (exit 478) off-ramp from southbound I-5 are scheduled to occur beginning at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025.
I-5 Detour Information During 55-Hour Closures:
- Southbound I-5 Eight Mile Road on-ramp – motorists are advised to take Eight Mile Road to northbound I-5 to SR-12/Flag City to southbound I-5 during this closure.
- Southbound I-5 Hammer Lane off-ramp – motorists are advised to exit at Benjamin Holt Drive for access to local streets during this closure.
Closures of these ramps are required for excavation and removal of the existing roadway surface, followed by constuction of new roadway surface and lane delineation (striping.)
Upon completion of these 55-hour ramp closures on March 31, 2025, a new traffic shift configuration will be implemented along the southbound I-5 Eight Mile Road/Hammer Lane corridor on April 10, 2025. Prior to the Eight Mile Road off-ramp, three lanes of southbound traffic will be split using the newly constructed #3 (right) lane, while the #2 (middle) lane will shift to the existing #1 (middle) lane behind k-rail (tunnel) and the #1 (left) crossed-over (tunnel) lane will remain in place. All three lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 will be open during daytime hours, with alternating lane closures occurring overnight. This traffic lane configuration is expected to be in place until July 21, 2025.
The above listed traffic shifts and lane/ramps closures are required as part of the I-5 Anchor Pavement Project that will improve 34 miles of existing pavement and shoulders from Hammer Lane in Stockton to the San Joaquin/ Sacramento County line. The project will also overlay on- and off-ramps with asphalt concrete at Eight Mile Road, SR-12, Turner Road, Peltier Road, and Thornton Road/Walnut Grove Road.
All work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues. For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert.
