The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is advising motorists to expect continued nighttime and daytime roadwork along parts of I-5 from north of Elk Grove to the U.S. Highway 50 interchange and to south of the American River.

The speed limit has been reduced to 55 miles per hour 24 hours a day and seven days a week for this project north of Laguna Boulevard to Richards Boulevard.

A contractor is scheduled for ongoing roadway excavation and slab replacement work with nightly lane restrictions and alternating ramp closures in place Monday through Friday from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Expect daytime and nighttime work to continue behind k-rail.

For better nighttime visibility, the striping at lane shift locations have been changed to a solid white line separating lanes. No passing signs are also in place.

Long-term lane shifts with striping are and/or k-rail are at these locations for northbound and southbound I-5:

  • Just north of Laguna Boulevard
  • Cosumnes River Boulevard
  • Pocket Road
  • Casilada Pedestrian Overcrossing (POC) north of Seamas Avenue
  • I-5 and U.S. 50 Junction
  • I Street to Richards Boulevard

The work is part of a $370 million project to rehabilitate 67 lane miles of roadway and build 23 miles of carpool lanes, add additional sound walls and improve the existing electrical and drainage elements. Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, is providing $48.3 million in funding.

Caltrans urges motorists to plan ahead for additional travel time. The California Highway Patrol will be at the work sites for traffic enforcement.
