Washington state is earthquake country. As part of an ongoing effort to minimize damage when a quake strikes, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin a new construction project to help protect Interstate 5 in Olympia.

This work will strengthen the I-5/Pacific Avenue overpass. Crews will install steel jackets on four separate bridge columns in order to help withstand quakes.

The work will require reduced lanes on Pacific Avenue approaching I-5. One sidewalk will remain open. The work will not affect I-5 or the Pacific Avenue ramps.

The project will begin as early as Monday, January 6. The work is scheduled to be complete by early spring.
