California: I-5 work at Pico Set to Begin in Mid-February

California Construction | I-5 Exit GuideWork could begin as early as Feb. 17 on the Avenida Pico segment of a $230 million widening of I-5 that is adding carpool lanes along a 5.7-mile stretch between San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente.

Caltrans and the Orange County Transportation Authority are partners in the project, which is being built in three segments – San Juan Creek Road to the Beach Cities curve, Beach Cities curve to Avenida Vista Hermosa and Vista Hermosa to just past Avenida Pico.

When engineers were designing the I-5 widening between San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, the cost estimate was $275 million. In 2014, as construction was about to begin, it was listed as $249 million. Now, it’s listed at $230 million. Officials say …
