One year into building a new southbound Interstate 5 Puyallup River Bridge in Washington, construction crews are reaching a new milestone and new heights on the project.

In early February, contractors will begin installing 54 girders on six of the nine bridge spans. To do this work, crews will mobilize a large crane in a work zone directly under the I-5 Puyallup River Bridges on 20th Street East.

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, January 30 through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 20th Street East under I-5 in Fife will close around-the-clock. During the closure, local businesses will have access on either side of the closure. A signed detour will be in place.

Once the project is complete in late 2021, the new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge will have four general purpose lanes plus a high occupancy vehicle lane that will connect HOV lanes from Fife into Tacoma.

In addition to building a new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge, the project replaces the East L Street overpass, widens I-5 near East L Street, adds a northbound auxiliary lane from I-705 to Portland Avenue, and replaces the last section of roadway that dates back to the 1960s.
